The idea that became Habitat for Humanity first grew from the fertile soil of a

community farm outside of Americus, Georgia

Our History

Our application process for 2020 is closed. We hope to begin taking applications in early 2021, so please check back later this year for more information. Thanks!

Habitat for Humanity International was established in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fullard in Americus GA. It is now a worldwide organization with one of its primary headquarters located in Atlanta GA.

In 1984, a few years after his presidency, President Jimmy Carter participated in a work trip to New York City to help build Habitat houses. His world status standing provided a tremendous boost to the notoriety and popularity of Habitat for Humanity International. However, he has never been involved with the governance structure of Habitat.

The Griffin Area Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1989 by Dr. Bill Day and members of First Presbyterian Church in Griffin. Our first house was built in 1990. Over the 30 plus years, GAHFH has partnered with 60 families to build and rehab homes in the Griffin Area.
